The best of what's on Amazon Prime Video this month.

Kelsey Grammer and Matter Boomer in The Last Tycoon

Amazon Instant Video is Amazon’s video streaming service, allowing users to watch films and TV for a contract-free monthly fee. Since its inception, Amazon has offered a range of titles to choose from, such as US shows you might not find elsewhere alongside exclusive film content. Much like Netflix, Amazon also hosts a number of Original series, which it has produced to be available exclusively on the platform. Amazon also features exclusive series that don’t air anywhere else in the UK. Here’s the best of what Amazon has to offer this month.

The Last Tycoon (Now)

The latest original series from Amazon, The Last Tycoon is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s final novel, which delves into the seedy underbelly of 1930s Hollywood. The Last Tycoon follows Monroe Stahr, an up-and-coming Hollywood producer as he battles his boss for the soul of their film studio. The series is set in a tough era for the US film industry and the world, with the Depression hitting alongside the growing influence of Hitler’s Germany on the eve of WW2.

The Last Tycoon continues Amazon’s precedent for quality original programming, bring big-name actors such as Kelsey Grammer to the platform. The series is ideal for fans of the novel or F. Scott Fitzgerald in general, with it carrying a similar tone and location as The Great Gatsby and, like that novel, has a lot of interesting things to say about a fascinating time in American history.

The Tick (August 25th)

The first of Amazon’s Pilot series, The Tick is an adaptation of the legendary comic strip and cartoon which sees a slightly simple but strong superhero known as The Tick takes to the streets to fight crime. He’s joined by a clever but nervous accountant whom he insists join him in his fight against crime as the brains to his brawn. From its first episode (which you can watch now), it’s clear that The Tick will retain the fast and funny superhero hijinks of the original series.

The Tick is the first series commissioned from Amazon’s set of pilots, in which Amazon Prime users voted on which pilot they’d like to see be made into a full series. Jean-Claude Van-Johnson (starring everyone’s favourite Belgian martial-arts star) is also being made into a full series later this year.

The Bureau (Now)

This Amazon-Exclusive series is an intense espionage series from France which sees a agent Malotru return from a mission in Syria and tasked to find a colleague who has gone missing. The Bureau takes place within a department in the French secret service which tracks agents who are in the field, with Malotru struggling to let go of his undercover identity as well as train a new recruit.

The Bureau takes some of the espionage intrigue of the James Bond film franchise and peppers it with hard-hitting real-world drama and powerhouse performances. The series is proof that it’s not just the US that is producing high-quality TV, with the foreign-language market also full of excellent and worthwhile projects. Watch the first 2 seasons of The Bureau right now.

Falling Water (Now)

This wholly original sci-fi series flew under the radar when it was released last year and deserves an audience. Fans of traditional sci-fi and high-concept drama will be at home here, with Falling Water offering an intriguing and mind-bending narrative.

Falling Water follows 3 unrelated people who slowly begin to realise they’re dreaming separate parts of the same shared dream. As they investigate further, they come to realise that the dream may hold the vital secrets to saving the world from a terrible threat. Falling Water takes the shared experience concepts of Netflix’s Sense8 and adds in more of a sci-fi flavour to create a thrilling and very binge-watch worthy drama. Watch the first season now on Amazon Prime Video.
