Top 5 Sky Box Sets | July 2019

Here's the best of what's available to watch in July.

Sky Box Sets features a huge range of TV series from all over the world, allowing Sky TV customers to get stuck into every episode of a number of shows. Sky Box Sets lets you watch your chosen show from beginning to end, so there's no waiting around for the next season to be uploaded. Viewers can watch whenever they want on-demand, via TV or mobile device. This is ideal for watching one episode at a time or bingeing a whole series at once. With so much choice on offer, it can be hard to pinpoint the essential Sky Box Sets viewing. Here's our pick of the best.

The Sopranos

This groundbreaking gangster drama changed TV forever, ushering in an age of complex characters arcs, huge thematic weight and acting and writing that rivalled anything the cinema had to offer. Starring the late James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano, the series sees him having to juggle the life of a mob boss with being a husband and father.

The Sopranos is one of the first big HBO series that paved the way for shows like The Wire and Game of Thrones. The series is superbly acted all the way through, with Gandolfini giving perhaps the best ever performance seen on TV. Fans of Mad Men’s short story approach to TV will fall in love with The Sopranos, with Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner cutting his teeth as a script writer on the show.

30 Rock

The legendary comedy finally hits Sky Box Sets, with all seven seasons available to watch now. 30 Rock follows Liz Lemon (Tina Fey), a comedy writer working on a live variety show based in New York (that’s heavily based on Saturday Night Live, which Fey wrote and starred in).

30 Rock is a hilariously meta comedy about writing comedy, with great performances from Fey and Alec Baldwin mixing with clever observations about the entertainment industry. 30 Rock is one of the many classic shows you can catch up with using Sky Box Sets, joining the likes of The Sopranos and The Wire in creating TV’s golden age.

Veep

This HBO comedy series recently aired its final season, with the full box set available to watch now. Veep stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as long-suffering Vice President Selina Meyer and follows her and her feckless team as she attempts to climb the male-dominated political ladder.

Veep is the brainchild of Thick Of It creator Armando Iannucci and features a lot of the savage takedowns and creative swearing that you’ll find on that show. Veep takes the Thick Of It format and thrusts it into the world of American politics, making it feel like a sweary version of The West Wing

Nathan For You

This strange and hilarious “docu-comedy” follows Nathan Fielder as he visits various small businesses and attempts to help them. Fielder plays a version of himself visiting real businesses, giving the series the vibe of a Sacha Baron Cohen project.

Nathan For You is a comedy series that’s initially difficult to get into due to just how bizarre it is, but once you’re in, you’ll love it. Anyone with an off-kilter sense of humour will soon get addicted, with Fielder nailing the believable ridiculousness of his character. Watch all four seasons now.

Blood Drive

This bloody, pulpy series is inspired by Grindhouse cinema and the Mad Max series. Blood Drive showcases a post-apocalyptic LA where climate change has caused the temperature to soar, water is a rare commodity and cars run on blood. The series follows cop Arthur Bailey as he joins with a femme fatale on a life-or-death race through America.

Blood Drive is ideal for fans of post-apocalypse action, with plenty of gore and fast-paced car racing to be found throughout the show. The series was unfortunately cancelled after its first season, but that doesn’t stop this being a guaranteed thrill-ride.
