Sky One to be retired and replaced with two new channels

Sky Showcase will broadcast the highlights from various Sky channels while Sky Max will be the new home of several Sky One shows and original content.

Sky has announced that it’s to retire Sky One and launch two new TV channels in its place

The broadcaster has confirmed that Sky One, which was launched in 1982 and is the UK’s oldest non-terrestrial channel, will leave TV schedules from the 1st September 2021.

In its place on channel 106 will be Sky Showcase which will feature a selection of top-rated content from across the Sky portfolio.

This includes shows, documentaries and films from Sky History, Sky Comedy, Sky Witness, Sky Nature, Sky Kids and Sky Arts.

Launching alongside Sky Showcase is Sky Max which will be the new home of Sky One series like A League of Their Own, The Flash, COBRA and The Russell Howard Hour

Sky Max will also broadcast its own original programming with a reboot of music panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, hosted by Greg Davies with Noel Fielding and This Country’s Daisy Cooper as team captains, to premiere this Autumn.

Sky One’s original comedy series like Code 404 and Hitmen Reloaded will move over to Sky Comedy to sit amongst hilarious US offerings like PEN15, The Office US and A.P Bio

“In this golden age of television, the sheer volume of incredible programming can be overwhelming," said Zai Bennet, managing director of content for Sky UK and Ireland. “Over the last 12 months we've been making it easier for people to find what they want to watch.”

"From September those looking for the very best of Sky will find it at the top of their programme guide on Sky Showcase, while Sky Max will become the new home of blockbuster entertainment joining the host of genre-led channels launched in the past year - so whether you're in the mood for crime, a documentary or just a laugh there's always a channel to suit."

"And if you're not sure what to watch, Sky Showcase will curate some of the highlights from our line-up so you can find something new to watch."
