What is Star on Disney+?
This new channel greatly expands Disney+'s viewing options for adults.
On 23rd February 2021, Disney+ got one of its most significant updates yet with the launch of Star which brings it an excellent variety of more adult-orientated content.
Our guide will tell you all you need to know about this new addition to the platform, including the kind of content that's available to stream and if you have to pay anything extra.
What is Star?
Star is a new subsection of Disney+ where you can stream films and TV shows that are geared more toward an adult audience.
Disney owns a vast selection of different entertainment channels and film studios and not all of these produce content that’s suitable for the family-friendly Disney+.
In the US, this type of content would go to other Disney-owned streaming platforms like Hulu but these aren't available in many other parts of the world. Enter Star as the solution.
How do I get Star?
If you’re an existing Disney+ subscriber you don’t have to do anything to get Star.
From 23rd February, whenever you sign into your Disney+ account you’ll see the Star heading displayed on your homepage alongside those for Marvel, Star Wars and the like. Simply click on this heading to access Star’s large library of content.
Only subscribers who have selected the 18+ content rating for their profile will see TV shows and films from Star appear on the homepage alongside Disney+’s other content.
Do I have to pay extra for Star?
Disney+ has confirmed that the overall price of a subscription is set to increase. The cost per month will rise from £5.99 to £7.99 while those that pay annually will be charged £79.90 up from £59.99.
These changes will come into effect from 23rd August for existing Disney+ subscribers but any new customers signing up for the first time will see these new prices.

Star has launched with 280 films and over 75 TV shows available to stream. These cover a great range of different genres and also include four exclusive Star Original series. The first two episodes of each Original are available to watch now with the rest set to follow on a weekly basis.

Upcoming TV series set to premiere on Star at some point in 2021 include The Dropout which chronicles the story of ex-Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, Taika Waititi comedy Reservation Dogs and the anthology American Horror Stories from Ryan Murphy.
Can I watch Star in 4K?
A nice advantage of Disney+ is that unlike Netflix you don’t have to pay extra to take advantage of the beautifully glossy 4K format.
14 films, including Die Hard, Braveheart, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Deadpool 2 and Independence Day, and the series Love, Victor are currently available to stream in 4K on Star. If you don’t yet have a 4K TV, the vast majority of the titles on Star can also be viewed in HD.
How do I set up parental controls on Star?
The first time you login to Disney+ after Star’s launch you’ll be asked to set up a content rating for your profile. Choose from either 0+, 6+, 9+, 12+, 14+, 16 or 18+ and only films and TV shows that meet this rating will be displayed.
You can change this at any time by clicking on your profile icon on your Disney+ homepage. Select edit profile, content rating then you’ll be prompted to enter your password before you can choose your new age rating.
This same menu will also give you the option to set up a pin for your profile so there’s for an extra layer of protection.
