Alien TV series could be in the works

The horror series might see a TV spinoff.

Ripley clutches Newt in Aliens.

A new series based on the Alien film franchise is potentially in development.

Rumours of the project recently emerged which suggested that the franchise was being moved into a TV format, though there is still very little information to go on.

This means that there are no concrete details on the plot, network or producers, so Alien fans should not get too excited yet.

Despite this, it makes sense that a TV series would be optioned, as the poor box office performance of 2017’s Alien Covenant makes it unlikely that we’ll be seeing a new film any time soon.

Fox (which owns the Alien franchise) cancelled any plans for a Covenant sequel late last year, with director Neill Blomkamp also claiming he had moved on from his proposed Alien film.

An Alien TV series would be a decent opportunity to explore some periphery characters in the potentially expansive universe of the films.

This is not the first time an Alien spinoff has been planned for television. A cartoon series based on Aliens was optioned in the ‘80s, but was cancelled soon after the pilot was made. The toys created for the show, however, remained and are still sitting on the shelves of Alien fans to this day.

Disney’s recent acquisition of Fox may change the way the franchise is dealt with, with Disney presumably wanting to get some value out of the brand.

Whether this manifests as a new film or as a TV series is yet to be seen.

You can watch Alien Covenant on Sky Cinema and NOW TV Sky Cinema right now.
