Amazon is set to adapt the Culture novels of late sci-fi writer Iain M Banks.
This is the latest of the retail and streaming giant’s TV commissions, with the series initially based on the first novel in the series - Consider Phlebas.
The Culture novels revolve around an advanced Utopian society that is drawn into a war with religious aliens known as the Idirans.
The sci-fi series has received critical acclaim among literary circles, with many previously thinking that they would be unfilmable thanks to their complex nature.
Amazon Studios has hired writer of Channel 4 thriller Utopia Dennis Kelly to adapt the novels.
Kelly commented that he was thrilled to be working on the series as a fan of Banks.
“Iain Banks has long been a hero of mine and his innate warmth, humour and humanism shines through these novels.
"Far from being the dystopian nightmares that we are used to, Banks creates a kind of flawed paradise, a society truly worth fighting for — rather than a warning from the future, his books are a beckoning."
Hollywood has attempted to get a film based on the books off the ground for years, with little luck.
With the amount of resources available to Amazon, fans may get the chance to see the screen version they’ve been waiting for.
