Ratings tracker BARB claimed that the final episode drew a huge 15.9 million viewers.
This is around a million more than last year’s final, and the highest viewing figure the show has seen since 2012.
The viewing figures put the episode amongst the top-10 most watched TV programmes of the decade - ahead of the 2010 World Cup match between England and Germany but behind a 2010 episode of The X Factor.
Contestant Candice Brown was named the winner of what is due to be the last series of the show on the BBC.
Channel 4 purchased the rights to the show earlier in the year, meaning that it will move channels for its next series.
In the process, the programme lost a number of its big-name talents, including presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc and culinary star Mary Berry.
The latest viewing figures are a huge number for Channel 4 to live up to, with its most-watched show currently an episode of Gogglebox which netted 5.8 million viewers.
