Black Mirror USS Callister could get spinoff

The USS Callister could be making more voyages.

A spinoff of the Black Mirror episode USS Callister could be in the works, its director has claimed.

Toby Haynes, who directed the first episode of the recently released 4th season of the sci-fi anthology show, said in an interview that a spinoff series based around the episode was something he’d be interested in doing.

“[It] is probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever. I was talking with Louise Sutton, who produced this and Metalhead, and she cooked up a brilliant idea of spinning it off into a TV series. I’m keen to see it as a TV series. I think Charlie might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know.”

The episode revolves around a frustrated tech genius who creates a mod for his virtual reality game that allows him to produce AI clones of the co-workers he despises.

With this, he lives out a Star Trek-inspired fantasy where the clones do his bidding as the captain of the ship - or face severe and cruel consequences.

The episode ends with the AI crew getting their freedom and dispatching of their overlord, allowing them to roam freely in the infinitely generated game as a space crew.

The episode was written by series creator Charlie Brooker and William Bridges, with Haynes overseeing the directing.

Haynes has previously worked on sci-fi series Doctor Who as well as other British shows such as Sherlock and Being Human

USS Callister creates a universe where anything is possible - albeit inhabited by man-child gamers - so a full series would have plenty to work with.

You can watch USS Callister, along with every episode of Black Mirror, on Netflix right now.
