Amazon has claimed that it is still developing its Dark Tower series.
The streaming platform had previously announced that it would develop a project based on Stephen King’s epic sci-fi/fantasy series in conjunction with the 2017 film.
However, the critical and commercial reception of the film, which starred Idris Elba in the lead role, has tanked any chances of a sequel or franchise - leaving fans wondering what the fate of the series will be.
Now, Amazon has spoken out about the project, with Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke claiming that the series was still being developed.
“Those are scripts that I haven’t gotten yet. I’ll be seeing those, that material, in the coming weeks. None of those things are dead. They’re very much alive.”
Since the disappointment surrounding the film version of The Dark Tower, there have been suggestions that the series may be a straight reboot rather than a continuation of the film, with Stephen King suggesting as much.
The Dark Tower film starred Idris Elba as the Gunslinger and Matthew McConaughey as the Man in Black, two enemies who wage war against one another in a different dimension which eventually spills onto Earth.
The series of novels are much-loved by Stephen King fans, with readers anticipating a film adaptation for a long time.
Veteran director Ron Howard had previously pitched an ambitious (and presumably too expensive) version of the story in the ‘90s, but never got it off the ground.
