The latest episode of Game of Thrones has garnered record viewers for HBO.
The US premium cable channel and streaming service announced that the opening of season 7 (which aired on Sunday night in the States) got 50% more viewers than season 6’s first episode.
It’s reported that a huge 16.1 million subscribers tuned into the watch the latest installment of HBO’s big-budget fantasy epic, with 10 million of those watching via HBO Go - the channel’s streaming platform.
This is the most-watched premiere of any of HBO’s programmes ever and also broke the record the concurrent amount of users streaming on HBO Go.
The episode was also the “most-tweeted-about” in the show’s history, with 2.4 million tweets posted during its airing.
Most of the feedback online from Dragonstone (the episode’s title) appears to revolve around the cameo of music sensation Ed Sheeran, with many fans unhappy with the appearance.
Backlash to the cameo has since caused Sheeran to delete his Twitter account.
Game of Thrones is a fantasy drama that focuses on the land of Westeros and its feuding houses. The show is based on Medieval England, with the South coming to blows with the North.
The series has just entered its highly anticipated 7th season, with the due to run until 2018.
