Game of Thrones the most pirated show in 2017

The fantasy epic has been watched by millions via torrent sites.

Game of Thrones has been named the most pirated show of 2017.

The fantasy series, which aired its 7th season last year, came on top when it came to illegal streaming and downloading, content piracy news site Torrentfreak reported.

The show beat out the likes of The Walking Dead and The Flash in order to take the throne, with 2017 being the sixth straight year it has been the most pirated.

This is unsurprising when you consider the viewing figures for season 7, the finale of which was the series most watched episode yet.

Despite being the most torrented show, the amount of people not paying to watch Game of Thrones is lower than it was when the show first started, with HBO since creating its own streaming platform in HBO Now, allowing viewers in the US to watch without subscribing to the channel.

Game of Thrones piracy was spurred along in 2017 due to the leak of several season 7 episodes before they aired, allowing curious fans to watch before they were officially available.

This meant that people who would not normally torrent episodes were tempted by getting their GoT fix in early.

Game of Thrones’ 8th and final season is currently in production, but isn’t due to be released until 2019.

Viewers will be able to watch Game of Thrones when it airs on Sky Atlantic and via the NOW TV Entertainment Pass
