A spin-off series based on the John Wick movies has been formally greenlit.
Named The Continental, the series was officially announced by TV network Starz, which also hosts shows such as Outlander and Black Sails.
Rumours of a series based around the popular action films have been around for a while, but this is the first official confirmation of its production.
The series will be set in the John Wick universe and is based around the Continental Hotel, which serves as a refuge for assassins such as John Wick (played by Keanu Reeves).
The Wire and Man in the High Castle writer Chris Collins will act as showrunner for the series, with John Wick 2 director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves set to executive produce.
Stahelski will also direct the opening episode of the series, with the director recently finishing work on Deadpool 2.
Speaking in an interview, he said that the world of John Wick made a spin-off series a worthwhile pursuit.
“They’ve got a really good structure. It’s very tied to the film [in that] it’s about the Continentals all over the world, how certain people come into that world, and what happens in relation to those people, which is cool. I think the world is very vast, and everything I’ve heard from it is very positive.
It’s something that studio seems very, very intent on [making] and very, very behind… You can be with the consigliere, concierge, the sommelier — you can be with all these different characters and walk through the world in different aspects; ones that I’m a little limited [from exploring] by staying with my lead guy.”
John Wick 3 is already in the works, with Starz stating that, since The Continental is a side series, it won’t interfere with the continuity.
The series has just started production, so a release date has not been set yet, though it can be expected at some point in 2019.
