The creators of the upcoming Judge Dredd TV series have confirmed that they’re in talks with actor Karl Urban to star.
The series, dubbed Judge Dredd: Mega City One is TV adaptation of the long-running British comic series, heralding from sci-fi comic compilation 2000 AD.
Judge Dredd takes place in a future where all of humanity lives in gigantic “Mega Cities”, which home hundreds of millions of people. Judges act as police in the world and are able to carry out sentencing in the field.
Karl Urban starred as the titular Judge in the 2012 action film Dredd, which was lauded by fans of the franchise as a faithful adaptation but did poorly in the box office.
Fans of the film have been clamouring for a sequel and were pleased to hear that a TV series was in the works, but the question on everyone’s lips was: would Urban return to play Dredd?
Now, the producers have said that they’re “in talks” with the actor to return to the role, with executive producer Jason Kingsley saying that they needed to make sure they did right by the franchise.
“We have been in discussions with Karl about his possible involvement in Judge Dredd: Mega-City One for some time. These conversations continue but we’re keen, he’s keen – it’s just a case of us making sure this show is everything we want it to be.
“This needs to be done right – the fans deserve it. Our team is working hard on scripts for the first season, creating engaging multi-thread storylines, one of which will be Dredd’s, but others which take us into the wider world of Mega-City One.“
Urban has previously said that he’d be very interested in returning to the role, with this now more likely to happen than ever.
There is no word yet on when Judge Dredd: Mega City One will appear on screens, with the series still in pre-production.
