Barry, a new film detailing US President Barack Obama’s junior year at New York City’s prestigious Columbia University in 1981, has received both a first trailer and a Netflix premiere date of 6th December.
The popular streaming giant snapped up the film after it debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival 2016 back in September to enthusiastic reviews.
Starring Australian newcomer Devon Terrell in his first feature length performance as the future president, the short trailer shows the young Obama moving through several different locations in New York City including a busy nightclub and a misty park.
Also starring are The Witch star Anya Taylor-Joy as Obama’s then girlfriend Charlotte, Ashley Judd as his hippie Mum Ann Dunham and Boyhood's Ellar Coltrane as roommate Will.
Directing is Indian filmmaker Vikram Gandhi whose previous controversial 2012 documentary film Kumare: The True Story of a False Prophet saw him assume the role of a fake guru in Arizona and gather a loyal following.
Barry is the second film released this year to focus on Obama’s early life. The first was Southside With You directed by Richard Tanne which detailed the eventful first date of Barack (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Obama (Tika Sumpter) in the summer of 1969.
