New sci-fi film Annihilation will be exclusively released on Netflix in the UK.
The unexpected deal was negotiated by the film’s original distributor Paramount and will see Annihilation become available for viewing on the streaming platform on 11th March, just 16 days after its international release in the US, Canada and China.
Deadline reported that the decision was inspired by the fact that director Alex Garland’s previous film, the Academy-Award winning sci-fi thriller Ex-Machina starring Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson, grossed only a disappointing $11.4 million overseas.
Annihilation is an adaptation of the first book in author Jeff Vandermeer’s award-winning Southern Reach trilogy which stars Natalie Portman as a biologist who leads an expedition into the dangerous environmental disaster zone where her husband (Oscar Isaac) disappeared.
Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez and Oscar Isaac are also set to star as the other members of the expedition.
As well as directing, Garland also has previous writing credits on such acclaimed films as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and Dredd.
