Olivia Colman is set to replace Claire Foy in the role of Queen Elizabeth in Netflix series The Crown.
The actress will come into the role in the show’s 3rd and 4th season, with the upcoming 2nd season due to be Foy’s last.
The Crown tells the story of Queen Elizabeth from her crowning as the Queen to present day, with the series supposedly planned to go on for 7 seasons.
Netflix’s plan since the inception of The Crown was to recast the actress in the main role every few seasons, as each season focuses on roughly a decade of the Queen’s life.
This would make Claire Foy too young for the role when it enters its 3rd season, which will presumably chart the Queen’s life during the early ‘60s to the ‘80s.
Foy has also previously spoken about how she would not want to be tied down to a 7-season series.
Olivia Colman is one of Britain’s most prolific actresses, having starred in a number of TV shows and films such as Peep Show, The Night Manager, Broadchurch and Hot Fuzz.
Since it aired, The Crown has grabbed headlines with its hugely extravagant production values, with the series being one of the most expensive ever made.
The series also stars Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Prince Philip, though it has not yet been announced who will take over that role.
Season 2 of The Crown will air on December 8th on Netflix. You can catch up with the first season right now.
