Sandra Bullock has been cast in the upcoming Netflix film Bird Box.
The actress will star in the film, which will be exclusively shown on streaming platform Netflix as part of its Original lineup that includes both movies and TV series.
Bird Box is based on the novel of the same name that follows a mother trying to teach her children survival skills in a post-apocalypse world.
The character (called Malorie) must navigate her and her children through the world that has been devastated by an event known as “The Problem” which has caused deadly creatures to roam the land.
This will be Bullock’s first lead role in a genre movie of its type since 2013’s Gravity, for which she was Oscar-nominated.
The script has been written by Eric Heisserer, who previously penned sci-fi drama Arrival and horror hit Lights Out.
Directing duties will be taken by Susanne Bier, who worked on popular spy mini-series The Night Manager.
The casting is the latest of Netflix’s push to get A-list actors on-board with its Original programming, with Brad Pitt previously starring in War Machine and Will Smith fronting Bright.
Bird Box is due to go into production next month, with no official release date yet announced.
