Black Lightning will be back in 2020.

Season 3 of superhero series Black Lightning will return for a third season.

The series is based on the DC character who has powers that allow him to control lightning (hence the name).

It stars Cress Williams in the titular role as a teacher who dons an alter-ego to protect his community.

Black Lightning is broadcast on CW in the US, though it is not considered part of the “Arrowverse”, which includes Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.

Many of those other shows have also been renewed, including Supernatural, which will get its 15th season.

President of CW, Mark Pedowitz, said that the CW wanted to renew these shows early in order to sort its 2020 schedule.

"In addition to growing our schedule across the week, we also continue to add more year-round programming. The early renewal of these signature CW series gives us a head start on laying out the 2019-2020 season, and this is just the beginning.

“These shows provide a strong foundation for our multiplatform programming strategy, and we look forward to building on this with even more returning and new shows as we approach the May upfront.”

UK viewers can watch Black Lightning on Netflix now.
