The second season of Marvel’s X-Men spinoff The Gifted will premiere on Sunday 14th October on Fox UK, showrunner Matt Nix has confirmed.
As with Noah Hawley’s Legion, it’s set in an alternative timeline to the one explored in the X-Men film series where Wolverine, Storm and the like have all mysteriously disappeared and mutant-kind is being hunted down by the US government’s Sentinel Services agency.
Judging from the explosive trailer released at last month's comic-con, season 2 will follow the peace-loving Mutant Underground as they attempt to deal with the growing threat of the evil Hellfire Club who're determined to take over the world.
Publicly headed by powerful mutant politician Reeva (Grace Byers), its members also include unstable pregnant psychic Polaris (Emma Dumont), telekinetic triplets the Stepford Cuckoos (Skyler Samuels) and Andy Strucker (Percy Hynes White) who betrayed the Underground at the end of last season.
Other cast members who've previously confirmed their return are the rest of the Strucker family, Kate (Amy Acker), Reed (Stephen Moyer) and mutant Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind), along with key Underground members Blink (Jamie Chung), Eclipse (Sean Teale) and Thunderbird (Blair Redford).
Nix has also stated it’ll explore the incident known only as 7/15 which first triggered the disappearance of the X-Men as “exactly happened there is certainly one of the central questions of the series.”
Last season's good viewing figures and positive critical reviews has lead to the total number of episodes being upped from 13 to 16 for this series.
Bryan Singer, who helmed arguably the best of the X-Men prequels Days of Future Past, is again set to return as executive producer while Nix will once again author an unspecified number of episodes.
