A second season of the TV version of The Purge has been announced.

USA, which is the network that carries the series, announced that the show will return for a second run after the season finale aired.

The Purge is based off the film series of the same name, with the premise being that all crime is legal in the US for one night only.

The film series has seen four entries, with the TV show taking place in the same universe.

James DeMonaco has acted as the executive producer of the show, having written and directed all but one of the films.

USA Network released a statement saying that it was happy for the series to return.

"USA Network is so proud to be the television home for the iconic franchise, The Purge. The partnership and creative trust of Jason Blum and everyone at Blumhouse Television and Universal Pictures ensured The Purge’s successful transition from film to TV – and, along with Universal Cable Productions, we look forward to digging even deeper into the mythology in season 2.”

Jason Blum, founder of Blumhouse - the producers of the films - added that the production house was eager to keep the project going.

“James Demonaco has done it again: the propulsive and compelling story he crafted for season 1 of The Purge truly resonated with audiences in a significant way. We are thrilled to embark on season 2, and can’t wait to bring more of James’ vision to USA and fans of The Purge.”

Whilst there is no release date for The Purge season 2 yet, it’s fair to assume that it will return sometime in 2019.

The Purge airs on Amazon Prime Video in the UK and you can catch the full first season right now.
