The Crown has finally found its Prince Phillip in Tobias Menzies.
The actor has been cast as the older version of the royal and will play opposite Olivia Colman’s Queen Elizabeth.
The series producers have been on the search for an actor to play the role for a number of months, with Paul Bettany originally sought out for the role.
Bettany could however not join the cast due to already existing acting fulfilments, most likely the 4th Avengers film.
Tobias Menzies has appeared in a huge number of TV shows and films, including Doctor Who, Black Mirror, Game of Thrones, The Night Manager and Catastrophe.
He most recently was part of the cast of AMC’s new horror series The Terror, which is based on the novel about a ship stranded in the Arctic where the crew are hunted by a monster.
Menzies will play Prince Philip for the 3rd and 4th seasons of The Crown, replacing Matt Smith as an older version of the character.
The plan for The Crown is that there will be 2 seasons portraying the royal couple in middle age and another 2 showing the elderly versions whilst also wrapping up the series.
The Crown has been critically acclaimed, receiving multiple BAFTA awards, despite recently coming under controversy due to the pay parity between stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith.
The series will now begin filming this year and is set for either a late-2018 or early-2019 release date. You can watch the first 2 seasons on Netflix right now.
