Top 5 Sky Box Sets | September 2018

By Nathaniel Dalby - Tue 11th Sep 2018 Features

Here's the best of what's available to watch in September.

Steve Buscemi in Boardwalk Empire.

Sky Box Sets features a huge range of TV series from all over the world, allowing Sky TV customers to get stuck into every episode of a number of shows. Sky Box Sets lets you watch your chosen show from beginning to end, so there’s no waiting around for the next season to be uploaded. Viewers can watch whenever they want on-demand, via TV or mobile device. This is ideal for watching one episode at a time or bingeing a whole series at once. With so much choice on offer, it can be hard to pinpoint the essential Sky Box Sets viewing. Here’s our pick of the best.

Boardwalk Empire

Yet another quality drama from HBO, Boardwalk Empire is set in Prohibition-era Atlantic City and stars Steve Buscemi as a ruthless gangster who sees his organised crime empire rise and fall. Over the course of the series, he must fight for control over the city as more bootleggers attempt to enter his world.

Boardwalk Empire is an epic and sprawling crime drama that once you start, you won’t be able to turn away from. The series features a superb central performance from Buscemi as well as Michael Kenneth Williams, Michael Shannon and Kelly Macdonald. Watch the full five seasons now on Sky Box Sets.

The Strain

The slick horror series offers something a bit different from the standard TV drama fare, mixing horror and disaster movie standards and weaving them into a TV show. The Strain follows a team of scientists as they battle a deadly disease that has wiped out most of the Earth’s population.

What starts out as a typical disaster drama slowly spins into a supernatural horror in a way that’s too good to spoil. Whilst occasionally too silly for its own good, The Strain remains entertaining all the way through its 4 seasons and is well worth working your way through.

The Handmaid’s Tale

Season 2 of this cautionary drama recently aired exclusively on Channel 4, but Sky customers can now catch the entire first season. The Handmaid’s Tale is an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s chilling novel which sees America taken over by a religious cult where women are used as slaves for reproduction.

Whilst The Handmaid’s Tale is in no way an easy watch, it’s worth sticking with for the superb performance from Elizabeth Moss, who adds a huge amount of humanity to the series. Despite its grim subject matter, The Handmaid’s Tale is gripping and important, offering a bleak but worthwhile watch.

Killjoys

For something a little less heavy this month, all 3 seasons of SyFy’s Killjoys are available to watch now. This Canadian space adventure follows a group of bounty hunters who work for a shadowy organisation as they track down people and property. When their dark pasts come back to haunt them, they’ll have to work together to survive.

Whilst Killjoys is typical fare for SyFy, its bright colours and irreverent tone makes it a relaxed and enjoyable watch. Sci-fi fans will appreciate the decent visuals despite the low budget and the plot zips by with enough pace that you’ll never be bored.

The Deuce

This gritty drama from Wire creator David Simon charts the beginning of the US porn industry in 1970s New York City. The Deuce stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal as they navigate the emerging industry and all the highs and lows that come with it.

The Deuce is a good example of something that would never be on anything but HBO, with the raunchy subject matter able to be let loose on the biggest premium channel the US has to offer. With top performances from the leads adding to the authenticity of the setting, The Deuce is a series you won't want to miss. Catch the entire first season on Sky Box sets now.
