A new trailer for the upcoming third season of True Detective has surfaced.

The crime anthology show is set to return next year for a new season starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as the latest detective in the hot seat.

The season is set in the Ozarks and is set over multiple time periods, with Ali seen as both old and young in the trailer.

Much like the first season, True Detective features a dark crime mystery that spans decades and is written in full by series creator Nic Pizzolatto.

Director of Blue Ruin and Green Room, Jeremy Saulnier, is set to direct the first two episodes of the season with the remaining directors yet to be announced.

Director of the first season, Cary Fukunaga, was thought to perhaps return to the series but has recently revealed to be attached to the 25th Bond film instead.

True Detective was an instant hit when it first premiered on HBO, with the performances from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson being critically acclaimed.

True Detective season 3 is set to hit US screens on January 13th, with the show presumably airing on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV Entertainment the following Monday.

You can catch the first 2 seasons of True Detective on Sky Box Sets and NOW TV Entertainment right now.
