True Detective is finally back in early 2019.

Mahershala Ali as Wayne Hays in True Detective.

The first trailer for the upcoming third season of True Detective has been released by HBO.

The US cable service aired the trailer after the season finale of Amy Adams thriller Sharp Objects - to the surprise of many viewers.

True Detective season 3 stars Mahershala Ali as Wayne Hays, a detective who investigates the kidnapping of a child.

The season is set in the Ozarks (much like Netflix series Ozark) and, much like the first season of True Detective, will span decades - with viewers seeing both a young and old version of Ali’s character.

True Detective is an anthology crime series, with each season telling a new detective story.

The first season took the TV world by storm with its performances from Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey garnering huge acclaim.

The second season, however, was rushed out after the success of the first and subsequently disappointed many fans.

It was thought that HBO would not continue creating the series until it’s writer Nic Pizzolatto announced that season 3 would happen, with Mahershala Ali attached.

Alongside the trailer, HBO also announced that season 3 would begin airing in January 2019.

True Detective season 3 will air on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
