2019 Women’s World Cup to air on BBC

2019 will see the BBC air the tournement once more.

The BBC has secured the rights to air the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in full.

The channel has previously aired the 2015 World Cup in Canada, and will once again take on the duties in two years time when the competition heads to France.

Much like 2015's tournament, the coverage will be split across TV, radio and online, with viewers able to see dedicated coverage of every stage.

Last time, the England team finished 3rd overall, with the USA taking home the final trophy.

The announcement marks the latest in a large increase in women's football coverage, with the BBC also planning to air highlights from the Women's Super League this Spring.

The Women's FA Cup Final will also air in May, with viewers able to tune in on both TV and Radio.

Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater, said that coverage of women's football has grown alongside interest in the sport.

"We're delighted that the BBC will bring the biggest tournament in women's football to the widest possible audience.

"Women's football has grown significantly over the last few years and we are proud of the contribution we have made. France 2019 promises to be another fantastic showcase for the sport."

The news joins a busy week for sports broadcasting news, with BT Sport recently renewing its rights to air the Champions League - in a deal thought to be worth over a billion pounds.

The new deal means that other channels such as ITV will no longer be able to air any part of the competition - not even the traditional highlights show.
