2020 mockumentary from Charlie Brooker headed to Netflix

The project will take a satirical look at one of the worst years in recent memory.

Writer Charlie Brooker has created a mockumentary about 2020 for Netflix.

Not too much is currently known about the project other than that actor Hugh Grant will star as a self-described “repellent historian.”

He revealed the existence of the project and his role in it earlier this week while being interviewed about HBO’s acclaimed murder mystery The Undoing, which sees him play a respected doctor whose accused of brutally killing his mistress.

"I’m doing a thing tomorrow, actually,” he said. “Charlie Brooker has written a mockumentary about 2020. It’s for Netflix, and I am a historian who’s being interviewed about the year. I’m pretty repellent, actually! And you’ll like my wig."

Brooker took a satirical look at the COVID-19 pandemic earlier in the year with his Antiviral Wipe special on BBC 2.

His annual Wipe series previously ran from 2006 to 2016 but was put on hold while he focused on other projects, specifically the dystopian sci-fi anthology Black Mirror

Speaking about the future of the acclaimed show back in May, he admitted that a sixth season may be quite a way away.

"At the moment, I don't know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I'm not working away on one of those," he said. "I'm sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I've been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh."
