Amy Adams to return to TV in Sharp Objects

The five-time Oscar nominee will return to the small screen in 2017.

Oscar nominee Amy Adams is due to return to TV in an adaption of Gillian Flynn's Sharp Objects.

The show, which is an adaptation of Flynn's 2006 novel, follows a journalist who comes back to her hometown after a series of murders.

The series will mark Adams' first foray into TV since her appearances in the US version of The Office in 2006.

The actress has exploded in popularity in recent years, with two recent performances in high-profile films Nocturnal Animals and Arrival being critically acclaimed.

Gillian Flynn's novel Gone Girl was adapted into film by David Fincher in 2014 to huge success, with Sharp Objects at some point planned to follow it.

However, executive producer Jason Blum said that they eventually decided the novel would work better as a TV series.

"We optioned that book five years ago - and it was before Gone Girl and before Gillian Flynn was Gillian Flynn. We optioned it and anticipated making a film... and then I had an early meeting with [producer] Marti Noxon.

“She pitched her version of it as a television series and I was super compelled by that. So we changed course - and it was very hard to change course, I'll tell you that!”

Sharp Objects will run for 8 episodes on HBO, with Adams claiming that the success of shows like True Detective spurred her on to take another TV role.

True Detective opened my eyes to the opportunity to create limited-run characters. And there are so many wonderful female roles on television. To develop [a character] over the course of that many weeks is going to be very strange for me.”

Whilst it's not known when the show will air, it is expected to be broadcast on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
