Bake Off final watched by over 7 million

Channel 4 whips up millions of viewers with Bake Off final.

The final of The Great British Bake Off was watched by over 7 million viewers on Tuesday evening.

The smash-hit baking competition show, which aired on Channel 4 for the first time this year, was watched by a live audience of 7.3 million.

This makes it the most watched programme on Channel 4 since the 2013 Paralympic Games, which at one point saw 7.7 million tune in.

The ratings for the final were successful despite Prue Leith - one of the Bake Off judges - accidently revealing who won hours before the episode aired.

Despite the high ratings for Channel 4, the figure is still low compared to the 14 million who watched the 2016 Bake Off Final, which was the programme's last episode on BBC One.

The series controversially moved to Channel 4 when the production company that makes it, Love Productions, demanded more money from the BBC, which they were unwilling to pay.

The move to Channel 4 saw some of the major talents leave in protest, with baking royalty Mary Berry and presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc all declining to continue.

They were replaced with restaurateur and food presenter Prue Leith and comedians Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding.

Despite the controversy, the show has remained largely the same, with the new arrivals slotting naturally into the roles.

The final of the show saw Sophie Faldo crowned the winner, with Kate Lyon and Steven Carter-Bailey as the runners-up.

Channel 4 has claimed that the series was watched by an average of 2 million people in the 16-34 age group, making it the most popular show for young audiences on any UK channel this year.
