BBC 1 comes top of 2016 UK TV ratings

The Beeb proves the most popular with this year's viewers.

BBC 1 has dominated ratings for UK TV this year, figures have shown.

Of the top 40 most watched programmes of 2016, BBC 1 was found to have 31, making it the most-watched channel in the country.

Among the top shows watched, The Great British Bake Off, Strictly Come Dancing and Planet Earth II were the 3 most popular with audiences.

All but one of the top 11 slots when it came to ratings were occupied by GBBO, with the second episode of Planet Earth II the only other programme to make it into the top 10 with 13.1 million viewers.

Strictly appeared 13 times in the top 40, with politician Ed Balls' unexpected dancing prowess helping to boost ratings.

The producers of Bake Off, Love Productions, will be aiming to replicate the huge ratings when the show moves to Channel 4 in 2017.

BBC's director of content, Charlotte Moore, said that she was glad that BBC 1 still had the power to pull in large audiences.

“I'm proud that BBC1 continues to unite us as a nation with shows that feel modern, fresh and in touch with our audience, entertaining millions every week of the year.”

ITV has fared less well in ratings, with one of its flagship shows, The X Factor, failing to make the top 40 for the second year running.

The Euro 2016 coverage proved to be ITV's most popular programming of the year, with England's matches attracting millions of viewers.

Only one drama was featured in the top 40 of the year - BBC 1's Sherlock special on New Year's Day.

The BBC will be hoping to continue this success over Christmas, with Christmas specials of Bake Off and Strictly, along with a new Agatha Christie adaptation all featuring as part of its lineup.
