BBC digital store to close down

The BBC Store will close down in November.

The BBC has announced that it will close down its digital store later this year.

BBC Store allows users to buy individual BBC programmes and series and download them to smart devices and computers.

This service runs alongside BBC iPlayer, allowing users to buy content that may not be available to stream or is part of the BBC's history of programming.

Now, the BBC has claimed that the store will close in November of this year - just 2 years after it initially launched.

A statement on the BBC's homepage said that the corporation was looking into new ways to bring archive content to viewers.

"Although you will still be able to watch your purchases until then, from now on we are no longer making programmes available to buy on BBC Store.

"The BBC will continue to find new ways of making BBC archive content available. And do remember that programmes on BBC iPlayer are now available to watch for up to 30 days after broadcast, alongside a range of complete series and fascinating collections.

Content that has been purchased will expire when the Store is taken down, but the BBC has said that people who have bought shows will be able to apply for a refund.

The news comes as the BBC is implementing a sign-in feature for its iPlayer service, in a move which has been called a “personalisation drive across the BBC”.

This means that users will have to create a BBC account in order to tune into BBC iPlayer.

It is thought that the BBC will eventually have a paid streaming service where it will offer content that it previously sold separately.
