BBC want Planet Earth III before Attenborough's 100th

The BBC are keen to continue with the huge success of the show.

Following the huge success of Planet Earth II, the BBC are reportedly very keen to begin production on a third season of the show so it can be released before beloved presenter and naturalist Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday.

Planet Earth II was Britain's most watched nature documentary in fifteen years and has consistently achieved incredibly high viewing figures over the course of its six-week run. Last Sunday's final episode was watched by around 9.5 million viewers, beating the X-Factor final which managed to pull in just 7 million.

The show took over four years to produce and was released a decade after the original Planet Earth was broadcast. With David Attenborough having celebrated his 90th birthday this year, time is really of the essence.

"We love working with Sir David and I think he loves working with us, and we want that to last as long as possible,” said BBC producer Mike Gunton. He added that it would "be crazy to say it will be here in three years or even five years' time".

“If it gets to the point where he's unable to do it anymore we'll have to rethink how we make these programmes” Gunton continued, "You can't replace him – it's pointless trying."

Originally joining the BBC way back in 1952, Attenborough has worked on a vast number of natural history and wildlife programmes including the critically acclaimed Blue Planet, The Life of Mammals, Frozen Planet and Africa.
