BT Sport renews rights to UEFA Champions League

Football fans will be glued to BT Sport until 2021.

BT Sport has confirmed that it has renewed its rights to broadcast the UEFA Champions League exclusively.

The deal, which starts from the 2018/19 season, means that BT Sport will have another three years of exclusive Champions League and Europa League coverage.

The Champions League TV rights have always been in contention, with previous rights shared between ITV and Sky Sports.

BT Sport has however been the home of the league since 2017, with an £897 million deal made in 2013.

The renewal of the rights is reported to have cost BT even more, with rumours of a £1.2 billion deal made.

The 2018/19 season marks new rules entering the competition, with a minimum of four teams from England, Spain, Germany and Italy now competing, resulting in more matches played.

BT Sport has claimed it will air “double header” nights for Champions League matches, with live games kicking off at 6pm and 8pm during the Group Stage.

BT Sport will also enhance its social media coverage of the league, with weekly highlights and clips being made available for free.

Last year, BT broadcast the Final on YouTube for the first time - taking the coverage to over 12 million viewers.

Consumer CEO at BT, John Petter, said that the two-match broadcasting would revolutionise coverage of the Champions League.

We are delighted to have renewed these rights. The UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League are two of the best competitions in the world and we would like to thank UEFA for choosing us as their exclusive broadcast partner in the UK.

“The UEFA Champions League is due to get even stronger and we are delighted that fans will be able to enjoy two live matches a night for the first time.”

BT Sport is available as part of BT TV along with other providers.
