Chernobyl announced as first Sky/HBO project

The mini-series will be the first of many projects.

The first production of the Sky and HBO collaboration has been announced.

Titled Chernobyl, the show will be a mini-series of five parts based on the real life events of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

This is the first project that Sky and HBO have undertaken together since the announcement of their partnership earlier this year.

The series will tell the story of the men and women who tried to prevent the disaster and who worked to stop it spreading through the rest of Europe.

Jared Harris, who has previously appeared in Mad Men and The Crown, is due to star in the mini-series as Valery Legasov, the Soviet scientist chosen by the Kremlin to investigate the accident.

Craig Mazin (The Huntsman: Winter's War) has written the scripts for the series, while Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead) will be taking over directorial duties.

HBO and Sky teamed up earlier in the year as part of a $250 million co-production deal, with the aim of producing dramas over a number of years that will air in both the UK and the US.

Chernobyl is expected to be one of a number of projects that will go into production over the coming years.

Managing director of content at Sky, Gary Davey, said that Sky Atlantic viewers should be excited about the collaboration.

“In Chernobyl, Craig Mazin has achieved something unique - his script is second to none, effortlessly combining the visceral, the tragic and the heroic perspectives behind this devastating event.

“The scale of the production makes it a perfect first project for our co-production partnership with HBO, encapsulating our ambition to develop high-end drama with international viewpoints and casting. We look forward to working closely with HBO to bring this important story to Sky Atlantic viewers.”

You'll be able to watch Chernobyl on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV when it airs next year.
