An official synopsis reveals that the currently untitled sequel will follow Ginger, Rocky and their new chick Molly as they return from their idyllic island life to deal with a “new and terrible threat” facing chicken-kind everywhere.
Mel Gibson, who originally voiced Rocky, will not be returning but it’s unclear if everyone else like Julia Sawalha, Imelda Staunton and Timothy Spall will also be replaced.
Academy-Award nominated Sam Fell, who also headed up Aardman’s Flushed Away and Paranorman with Chris Butler, will direct.
Original writers Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell will be joined by Rachel Tunnard with Nick Park in a consulting role.
Chicken Run was released back in 2000 to great reviews from both fans and critics alike going onto become the highest-grossing stop motion animated film in history.
"Fans around the world have waited patiently for a sequel idea worthy of Chicken Run so we're delighted to announce, on the 20th anniversary, that we've found the perfect story," said Peter Lord who co-directed the original.
"Netflix feels like the ideal creative partner for this project too: they celebrate the film-maker, which means we can make the film we want to make – the one we really care about – and share it with a global audience.”
