Deleted Star Trek scenes to be revealed on new Blu-Ray

A new release of Star Trek: The Original Series will feature deleted scenes from the show for the first time.

A three-disc Blu-Ray set, which is due to be released on December 5th, will allow Trekkies to see unseen footage for the first time in the show's history.

The footage has recently been released from The Roddenberry Estate, which holds all the rights to Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's work, thereby making the Blu-Ray set possible.

As well as deleted scenes, viewers will be able to see alternate takes, omitted dialogue, outtakes and original FX elements.

New documentaries based around the show will also feature on the set, which feature interviews with creative and production personnel as well as famous Star Trek fans.

The new set has been planned as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, with the new movie Star Trek: Beyond and the upcoming TV series also adding to the mix.

George Takei, star of the original series, said that Star Trek was still as culturally relevant as it has ever been.

“On the surface, Star Trek is a rip-snortin' good space opera, but beyond that, what Gene Roddenberry wanted to do was to use science-fiction as a metaphor for issues of the time.

“Those issues still are relevant today, maybe in a different guise. Those original TV episodes being seen today can be related to other contemporary issues: like LGBT issues."

Star Trek: The Original Series is available to watch now on Netflix.
