Disney+ has officially ordered a National Treasure TV series.
The show will consist of ten episodes and serve as a reimagining of the film franchise of the same name which starred Nicholas Cage, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger and Jon Voight
Cage’s multi-talented historian, cryptozoologist and treasure hunter Dr Benjamin Gates will be replaced by a new lead character, a 20-year-old Latina named Jess Morales.
“The series explores the timely issues of identity, community, historical authorship and patriotism, told from the point of view of Jess Morales, a twenty-year-old dreamer,” reads the plot synopsis given by entertainment news site Deadline.
“With her diverse group of friends she sets off on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover her mysterious family history and recover lost treasure.”
Queen of Katwe’s Mira Nair will direct all episodes of National Treasure with husband and wife duo The Wibbleys, who wrote the original two films, set to author the script.
In addition to this, a third National Treasure film is also in development with both producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original director Jon Turtletaub returning. Bad Boys for Life’s screenwriter Chris Bremner has been tapped to write the script.
National Treasure joins several other Disney films like Turner and Hooch and The Mighty Ducks which are set to be adapted into TV series.
