Disney to release first live-action Star Wars TV series

The series will debut on their streaming service toward the end of 2019.

The first live-action Star Wars TV series is currently being developed by Disney, CEO Bob Iger has announced.

As the project is still in its very early stages, any details regarding major elements like plot, casting and the exact part of the extensive Star Wars timeline it'll be taking place in have not yet been made available.

Iger has confirmed however that the series will debut on Disney's brand-new Netflix style online streaming service toward the end of 2019.

The currently unnamed platform is also set to launch in 2019 and is the company's attempt to directly compete with popular streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video which have enjoyed absolutely staggering levels of success over the last few years.

Its content catalogue will be a mix between older and brand-new original films and TV shows from both Disney and sister company Pixar and, according to Iger, will have a lower monthly subscription fee than Netflix.

Although this series would be the first live-action Star Wars one to ever be created, there have already been two well-received animated Star Wars TV series released by Lucasfilm.

The Clone Wars, set between Episode Two: Attack of the Clones and Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith, ran from 2008 to 2014 on Cartoon Network and Star Wars Rebels, set between Episode Three and Episode IV: A New Hope, which is currently running on Disney XD.
