Dune spinoff series in the works
The series will be set in the same universe as Denis Villeneuve’s 2020 film.
Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune film is to receive a female-focused spinoff series.
Dune: The Sisterhood has been picked up by Warner Media for release on its as-of-yet unnamed streaming service.
Set in the universe established by Frank Herbet in his influential 1965 sci-fi novel Dune, the series will focus on the mysterious and incredibly powerful group of women known as the Bene Gesserit.
A description of the series reads as follows:
“Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune.”
Villeneuve will direct the pilot which is to be written by Doctor Strange’s Jon Spaihts.
The two also co-wrote the screenplay for Villeneuve’s upcoming Dune reboot starring Timothee Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson that’s set for a 2020 release date.
“The Bene Gesserit have always been fascinating to me,” Villeneuve said. “Focusing a series around that powerful order of women seemed not only relevant and inspiring but a dynamic setting for the television series.”
