Exorcist season 2 to draw from Exorcist 3 film

Season 2 will take inspiration from a cult classic.

The second season of The Exorcist TV series will draw heavily from the third Exorcist film, its creator has announced.

Writer and showrunner Jeremy Slater said in an interview that the upcoming second season of the show would take inspiration from the film Exorcist 3: Legion.

Legion is a 1990 supernatural crime thriller, which sees a detective track a satanic serial killer known as The Gemini.

The film is widely thought of as the best Exorcist sequel, with the film being an improvement over the much-maligned Exorcist 2: The Heretic.

Exorcist 3 is largely notable for including a legendary jump-scare, which sees the killer spring from seemingly nowhere to attack a nurse.

Slater mentioned in an interview that the new season would draw from the tone of Legion.

“There's a moment from The Exorcist III that every horror fan knows and loves. We're looking into how we can get that moment in our show this year. It involves a hospital. It's the single best jump scare in horror movie history aside from Ben Gardner's head coming out of the boat in Jaws. Also, I love the idea of a demonic serial killer.

“We're not exactly doing the Gemini Killer (Brad Dourif) this year with the new demon. But, I think you are going to see that this demon has a pattern and a methodology. It's a boogeyman throughout history that has claimed a lot of notches on its belt. It's nowhere closer to being finished.”

The Exorcist TV series surprised fans when it debuted last year, with many praising the creepy atmosphere that the show retains from the source film.

You'll be able to watch season 2 of The Exorcist when it premieres in September on FOX.
