Expanse fans petition to save cancelled series
Fans have taken arms in order to expand the series.
Fans of The Expanse have started a petition to save the recently cancelled sci-fi series.
The show, which was produced by SyFy and distributed by Netflix in the UK, was cancelled earlier this week, despite being popular with fans.
The Expanse is set in a future where humanity has successfully colonised the Solar System and focuses on the infrastructure and conspiracies that arise from it.
The series has won a Hugo Award for its work but this did not save it from being cancelled by SyFy, which claimed that it was too expensive to justify considering its low viewership.
Now, fans of the series have set up a petition asking for the show to be picked up by another company, citing Netflix or Amazon as ideal choices.
At the time of writing, the petition has reached over 96,000 signatures after just six days.
The Expanse was one of a number of shows to suffer cancellation recently, with cop comedy Brooklyn 99 and satanic crime procedural Lucifer also getting the chopping block.
With Netflix already owning the international distribution rights to The Expanse, it's a good bet that it will pick up the series to air worldwide, especially considering it has almost unlimited funds to spend on a big-budget sci-fi series.
Netflix also benefits from a much larger worldwide viewership than SyFy, which is a niche channel even in the US.
The Expanse would have to contend with Lost in Space - the platform's other big sci-fi series - for a place on the Netflix roster, though this has not stopped a number of Original shows and films also being featured.
You can watch the first 2 seasons of The Expanse on Netflix now.
