First The Walking Dead film to begin shooting in Spring 2021
It will explore what Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) got up to after being picked up by that helicopter.
The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln has confirmed when the upcoming Rick Grimes spinoff film will begin shooting.
Speaking during an interview with entertainment news program Extra, he revealed that the project will begin filming in Spring 2021.
First announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2019, it was originally set to enter production the same year. The creative team ran into a bit of difficulty trying to make the film both a pay off for long time fans and accessible for new viewers however.
The coronavirus then struck and producer David Alpert confirmed that production would be temporarily shut down in July 2020.
Not too much is known about the currently untitled project, other than that it’s the first of a planned trilogy which will pick up with Rick Grimes (Lincoln) following his exit from the long-running series in 2018.
Rick was last seen by fans critically-injured but alive after blowing up a bridge loaded with zombies to save his family and the community of Alexandria.
Accompanied by former foe Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), he was picked up by the mysterious helicopter which has been glimpsed flying around over the last few seasons.
The film will be directed by Greg Nicotero, who has previously helmed over 30 episodes of the show, and written by the franchise’s Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple.
This planned film trilogy is just one of several The Walking Dead projects in the pipeline. Beginning this month, six new episodes will air to bridge the gap between seasons 10 and 11.
There’s also new seasons of its two spinoffs, Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, to come, as well as a brand-new show following Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Normal Reedus) and a planned anthology series Tales of The Walking Dead.
You can stream seasons 1 to 9 of The Walking Dead on Amazon now.
