Amazon debuts first trailer for Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The clip premiered during the halftime break for the 2022 Superbowl.

Amazon has released the first official footage from its eagerly-awaiting Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series.

The suitably epic minute-long clip debuted yesterday on 13th February during advert break for the Superbowl.

Opening with sweeping shots of an island kingdom and rolling green hillsides, it gives fans a look at several of the major characters set to lead the show’s huge ensemble cast.

The first character seen, and the one providing the voiceover, is a creature known as a Harfoot (Markella Kavenagh) who is a friendly, loveable type of Hobbit.

Younger versions of Galadriel (Saint Maud’s Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) are also glimpsed alongside a new elven character named Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) who we see in the forest shooting a bow.

The former is seen several times throughout the trailer and is much more involved in the action than her older counterpart, shown climbing a mountain, riding a horse into battle and shipwrecked at sea with a human character named Hallbrand (Charlie Vickers).

Dwarves too are briefly featured in the form of Prince Durin IV (Owain Arthur) and Princess Disa (Sophia Nomvete) of Khazad-dûm gazing up into the sky.

An intriguing shot later on in the trailer sees two men, one of which is entirely naked, climbing through a volcanic, fiery landscape that looks a lot like Mt. Doom. Could this be teasing the origins of Sauron?

The Rings of Power is set during The Second Age which took place thousands of years before the events of Peter Jackson’s beloved film trilogy.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will serve as joint showrunners and also sit on the show's writing team alongside Gennifer Hutchison, Helen Shang, Jason Cahill, Justin Doble, Bryan Cogman and Stephany Folsom.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on 2nd September 2022.
