Game of Thrones creators sign exclusive Netflix deal
It's estimated to be worth around £164 million.
Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss have signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Netflix.
They’ll join other high-profile names like American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes in directing, writing and producing films and TV series for the platform.
The pair were reportedly the subject of a fierce bidding war between several major streaming services, which also included Amazon Prime Video and Apple’s upcoming Apple TV.
“We are thrilled to welcome master storytellers David Benioff and Dan Weiss to Netflix,” said Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarandos.
“They are a creative force and have delighted audiences worldwide with their epic storytelling. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations will bring to our members.”
With the streaming landscape set to become increasingly cluttered over the next few years, it’s Netflix’s hope that this deal will produce another Game of Thrones-sized megahit.
Both Disney and Apple are set to launch their own platforms in the coming months, offering five exclusive Marvel shows and projects from Stephen Spielburg respectively.
There’s also Amazon’s highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings series and their similarly high-profile deal with Westworld creators Jonathon Nolan and Lisa Joy.
All eight seasons of Game of Thrones are available to stream on NOW TV.
