Game of Thrones final season could run longer, says HBO

The fantasy epic might not be over just yet.

The final season of Game of Thrones could run longer than the proposed 6 episodes.

Rumours from HBO claim that the network has ordered that the final season run longer than planned, against the wishes of writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Season 7 of the show, which will air this summer, will reportedly have 7 episodes compared to the standard 10.

Season 8 was expected to have a similar running time, with the show's conclusion presumably including large and expensive battle sequences.

However, this is now “under consideration” from HBO, with the network and the showrunners still deciding how best to end the series.

Casey Bloys, programming president at HBO, said that he “hopes” the writers will deliver more than six episodes in the final season.

“They're still figuring it out because I think they're trying to get a shape of the season.

“They always do what they think [will yield] the best version of the show. It's all about how many they're comfortable with. But I'll always take more.”

Season 8 of the show has not been officially confirmed, though it is all but guaranteed to happen.

With Game of Thrones being such a huge property for HBO, more rumours have also emerged about a spin-off being in the works, although that has not been confirmed.

The show features a wide range of characters, making a spin-off an easy sell for the network.

Game of Thrones season 7 will air at some point in the summer on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV.
