Game of Thrones prequel series ordered by HBO

Game of Thrones will delve into its past in a new series.

A new Game of Thrones series has been commissioned by HBO.

The series is set to be a prequel to the standard show, which will air its final season next year.

HBO is reportedly working on 5 different spin-offs of Game of Thrones, with writers such as Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Carly Wray (Westworld), Brian Helgeland (42) and Game of Thrones veteran Bryan Cogman all developing ideas.

This series is being written by Jane Goldman and executive produced by Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin.

Goldman has worked on a number of high-profile projects, including Kick-Ass, X-Men and Kingsman as well as chiller adaptation The Woman in Black.

HBO has released a full synopsis for the project, suggesting that it will be set further back than people assume.

“Taking place thousands of years before the events of GAME OF THRONES, the series chronicles the world's descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros's history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it's not the story we think we know.”

Despite the seemingly large amount of work being done to keep Game of Thrones going in some capacity, it's unlikely we'll see any sign of the series until at least 2020, with HBO bosses saying that there would be at least a year in between Game of Thrones finishing any spin-offs starting.
