Game of Thrones writers to create alternate-history series

The showrunners will return with an original series.

The writers of Game of Thrones have announced plans for a new series.

Named ‘Confederate', the series will be set in an alternate-history America where the Confederacy won the Civil War and slavery was retained all the way to modern times.

The writing duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has overseen fantasy smash-hit Game of Thrones since its inception, with the 7th season of the show currently airing.

The series is due to be the pair's next big writing project after Game of Thrones finishes next year, with the writers claiming to be uninterested in the number of planned spinoffs.

Confederate is expected to have a similar tone to fellow alt-history series The Man in the High Castle, with America on the brink of a third Civil War in the series.

Benioff and Weiss will not be tackling the show alone, with writers Nichelle Tramble Spellman and Malcolm Spellman joining them for scripting duties.

Since the announcement, criticism has been levelled at the writers, with some saying that they did not have the pedigree to tackle such a difficult subject, with others even accusing them of attempting “slavery fan-fic”.

The creators have hit back at critics, saying they should let them make the show before it is judged, with Malcolm Spellman claiming that the show would have important things to say about contemporary America.

“I think people have got to stop pretending that slavery was something that happened and went away. And it's easy for folks to hide from it, because sometimes you're not able to map it out, especially with how insidious racism has become.

“But everyone knows that with Trump coming into power, a bunch of things that had always been there got resurfaced. So the idea that this would be pornography goes back to people imagining whips and plantations. What they need to be imagining is how things are today, and a story that allows us to now dramatize it in a more tangible matter.”
