George Clooney to direct and star in Catch-22 TV series

He'll be playing the novel's main antagonist Colonel Cathcart

Hollywood A-Lister George Clooney is set to both direct and star in a TV adaptation of Joseph Heller's 1961 classic wartime satire Catch-22.

He'll be playing corrupt US army Colonel Cathcart who's the main antagonist of the piece.

Clooney's long-time producing partner Grant Heslov, who also worked with him on WW2 heist film The Monuments Men and this year's darkly comic thriller Suburbicon, will also be assisting him with directing duties on the six-episode series.

Catch-22 tells the story of John Yossarin, a US Army pilot in WW2 whose constant efforts to have himself declared unfit for duty land him in an impossible situation.

If he were truly crazy, he wouldn't care about heading up dangerous and possibly suicidal missions. But, if he's not insane and doesn't want to fly them he's obviously of sound mind and is so capable of undertaking them.

It's not yet been announced who will play the role of Yossarian or any of Heller's other major characters like Yossarian's strange roommate Orr and Cathcart's strict superior Lt Colonel Korn.

Heller's novel was previously adapted into a feature film by Mike Nichols in 1970 and starred Alan Arkin, Richard Benjamin and Art Garfunkel.

This will be Clooney's first TV role since his breakout turn in popular long-running medical drama ER.

He'll join other big names like Academy-Award winner Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman who both ventured into TV this year with critically-acclaimed turns in HBO's drama series Big Little Lies.
