Gillian Anderson cast as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown

The Iron Lady is set to clash with Her Maj.

Gillian Anderson is set to portray British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown.

The American actress is best known for her role in sci-fi series The X-Files, but has more recently starred in shows like The Fall and Netflix series Sex Education

Anderson will play Thatcher in season 4 of The Crown, with the announcement coming before season 3 has been released.

Thatcher was Prime Minister of the UK from 1979 to 1990, making her an important but divisive figure in recent British history.

She was famously played by Meryl Streep in the 2011 film The Iron Lady, a biopic about her life which was criticised for managing to avoid politics.

The Crown is a series that follows Queen Elizabeth II throughout her life, with Claire Foy portraying her in seasons 1 and 2.

Olivia Colman has been cast in the main role for seasons 3 and 4, which focuses on a later part of her life.

The Queen famously was not a fan of Thatcher, giving the series potential to include some tense scenes between Colman and Anderson.

Whilst a release date for season 3 of The Crown has yet to be announced, it is expected to return at some point this year.

The series is one of the most expensive ever produced and is one of Netflix’s flagship show, meaning it takes its time with production.
