GoT prequel name revealed as The Long Night

Naomi Watts also announced in lead role.

The prequel series to Game of Thrones has had its official title revealed.

The series is now known as The Long Night, with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin taking to Twitter to reveal the news.

“Casting is now underway for THE LONG NIGHT, the first of the GAME OF THRONES successor series to be ordered to film. HBO has just announced the first cast member: Naomi Watts is coming on board as one of our stars.”

Game of Thrones fans will recognise the title already as it suggests that the series will take place thousands of years before the events of the main show during a period where the dreaded Winter lasted for many years.

In the series lore, this period saw the White Walkers appear for the first time, setting up the main villains of Game of Thrones.

Alongside the title reveal, Naomi Watts has been named as the lead cast member, with more casting set to be announced soon.

Watts is perhaps best known for films such as King Kong and Mulholland Drive, with the actress also appearing in last year’s Twin Peaks: The Return.

Game of Thrones is set to air its final season next year, with HBO planning a number of spin-offs to keep the property going.

The series is probably the most popular in the world and features a deep, untapped lore that is ripe for TV adaptations.

The Long Night is being produced by Jane Goldman, who wrote the scripts to films such as Stardust, Kingsman and X-Men: First Class.

You’ll be able to watch The Long Night when it eventually airs (probably in 2020) via Sky Atlantic and the NOW TV Entertainment Pass.
