Great British Bake Off final draws record viewership

The finale of BBC One’s The Great British Bake Off drew a record number of viewers, reports have shown.

According to the ratings, 14.5 million viewers tuned in to see the final episode of the BBC's hugely popular baking competition, won by contestant Nadiya Hussain.

More are expected to be added to the total after figures from the BBC's catch-up service BBC iPlayer are consolidated.

The popularity of the BBC One show has made the finale the most watched show this year, moving the Britain's Got Talent final and the “Who killed Lucy?” episode of Eastenders down to second and third place respectively.

As well as this, the episode also became the most watched programme on a Wednesday night since Christmas Day 2002.

Overall, Bake Off has featured 6 times in the top 10 most-watched programs for this year so far. Last year, it was only beaten by the England v Uruguay World Cup game.

With The Great British Bake Off now one of the BBC's flagship shows, it is expected to continue for a number of years, with a new series next year already being confirmed.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Breakfast, winner Nadiya claimed that watching the show back felt like reliving the moment she was voted as the best baker.

“It feels like I'm reliving that moment again. It was one of the best moments of my life.”

“My husband tried to get me to apply two years ago and I said, 'look, I don't have the confidence to do something like this', and this year he pretty much forced me and said, 'you're really good, you're really clever, you should just do it, what's the worst that will happen?”.

Whilst Bake Off is over for another year, BBC One has the upcoming series of The Apprentice to replace it on its Wednesday night slot.
